About this course

The Film Studies A2 programme is a one-year course of study and should be taken in conjunction with two or three other subjects and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Based at our City Centre campus in Cardiff, learners may be able to take this qualification as a part-time student.

What you will study

A2 Film Studies follows on from AS and consists of the following two modules:

Module FM3: Research Project and Creative Work

This module comprises a small-scale research project analysing the work of a chosen star, director or production team. The emphasis will be on the subject's creative work and your own personal responses. It comprises an annotated catalogue, a presentation script and evaluation. You will then be given the opportunity to expand upon the project by developing a treatment of the assignment.

The module is assessed internally and by external moderation. A coursework portfolio (worth 50% of the overall A2 mark) will be submitted comprising a collection of materials (images, reviews, articles etc.) and research conclusions. The creative work will include the treatment of your research project.

Module FM4: Critical Responses to Cinema

The focus here is on the study of three particular aspects of global cinema, comprising analysis of Cinematic New Waves, Spectatorship and a Critical Study of a single film. The module will concentrate on the historical and social context of world cinema, as well as a detailed synoptic analysis of Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. It will also examine the relationship between films and audiences and will include a combination of early, classic and contemporary films.

This module is externally assessed with a 2 ½ hour paper.
