About this course

The Mathematics A2 programme follows on from AS Mathematics (Legacy) and should be taken in conjunction with two or three other subjects and the Welsh Baccalaureate. 

Based at our City Centre campus in Cardiff, learners may be able to take this qualification as a part-time student.

A-Level Mathematics is a good choice for pupils due to the flexibility that it offers: 

  • It supports other subjects such as all three sciences, Psychology, Information Technology and many others. 
  • It develops your ability to think logically and present formal arguments, which is essential in any career.
  • It is a challenging qualification, welcomed by all universities, whichever degree course you apply to study.

What you will study

During the course the following areas will be covered:

Unit 3: Pure Mathematics B

Written examination : 2 hours 30 minutes

35% of A level qualification

Candidates will be expected to be familiar with the knowledge, skills and understanding implicit in Unit 1.

Topics include –

Proof by contradiction

Simplify rational expressions, including by factorising and cancelling and by algebraic division

Sketch curves defined by the modulus of a linear function.

Understand and use composite functions; inverse functions and their graphs

Unit 4: Applied Mathematics B

Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes

25% of A level qualification

Candidates will be expected to be familiar with the knowledge, skills and understanding implicit in Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3.

The paper will comprise two sections:

Section A: Statistics (40 marks)

Section B: Differential Equations and Mechanics (40 marks)

Successful completion of AS programme including satisfactory attendance and tutor recommendation.
