About this course

Our BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science is a qualification for post-16 learners who want to continue their science education through applied and practical learning, and whose aim is to progress either to university or employment in the science sector. This programme is ideal for learners who have an interest in either being lab technicians, working in forensic or biomedical science, becoming a nurse or a paramedic or for learners who want to study a science subject at university.

This is a two-year full-time course. In Year 1, learners will achieve an Extended Certificate in Applied Science.

Entry requirements

You’ll need: 5 GCSEs at grades A*–C, or a Level 2 Diploma with a Pass or higher Grade C or above in GCSE English Lanaguage or Welsh, or a Pass in Essential Skills Level 2 Communication Grade C or above in GCSE Maths, or a Pass in Essential Skills Level 2 Numeracy CC or above in GCSE Science Double Award, C or above in any science (triple) or Merit in BTEC First Applied Science / OCR Technical in Science Level 2

Teaching and assessment

The course is assessed through a combination of internal and external assessment.
Internal Assessment
Internally assessed units comprise of 3-4 coursework assignments completed over the course of the academic year. Each assignment will address a different topic within the unit. All assignments must be submitted via Microsoft Teams.
External assessment
Units 1, 3, 5, and 7 are written examinations which are taken at set times in January and May. These assessments are marked and graded by the exam board. January exam results are released in March, and May exam results released in August.
