About this course

Our BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science is a qualification for post-16 learners who want to continue their science education through applied and practical learning, and whose aim is to progress either to university or employment in the science sector. Based at our City Centre campus in Cardiff, this programme is ideal for learners who have an interest in either being lab technicians, working in forensic, analytical or medical science, becoming a nurse or a paramedic or for learners who want to study general/applied science at University. This is a two year course, with the qualification achieved being the equivalent to two A Levels.

What you will study

Learners will study the following 6 mandatory units:

  • Principles and Applications of Science I
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Laboratory Techniques and their Application
  • Principles and Applications of Science II
  • Investigative Project

Plus 2 additional units (potentially):

  • Forensic evidence, collection and analysis
  • Diseases and infections

Entry requirements

A Level Pathways have the following minimum entry requirements: Scholars 4 A Levels with EPQ: 9 GCSEs A*-C including Maths and English Language AND 5 A*-A grades 3 A Levels with Welsh Baccalaureate: 8 GCSEs A*-C including Maths and English Language AND 5 A*-B grades 2 A Levels and 1 BTEC Extended Certificate with Welsh Baccalaureate: 8 GCSEs A*-C including Maths and English Language AND 3 A*-B grades 2 A Levels with Welsh Baccalaureate: 6 GCSEs A*-C including Maths and English Language AND 1 A*-B grades 1 AS Level with 1 BTEC Extended Certificate or 2 BTEC Extended Certificates with Welsh Baccalaureate: 5 GCSEs A*-C including Maths and English Language Individual Subject Entry Requirement Maths minimum: C English Language minimum: C Other Requirement: CC in Double Award or Merit in BTEC Science
