An award-winning year for Cardiff and Vale College Auto students

8 Jul 2021

Vehicle Finishing, Vehicle Body Repair and Heavy Vehicle Engineering students at Cardiff and Vale College have won an impressive ten industry and skills awards in 20-21.

Despite facing the challenges brought by learning during lockdown, the learners have brought home medals and awards across the board.

The Quality Skills Alliance (QSA) is a network on apprenticeship training providers across South Wales which is chaired by CAVC. At the 2021 QSA Annual Awards, Thomas Venn won the Automotive Body Repair Awards and Joao Camacho took home the Automotive Heavy Vehicle Award.

CAVC’s Auto students also put in an outstanding performance in this year’s Skills Competition Wales, winning an array of medals. Instead of travelling from college to compete this year, all heats were held ‘in-house’ at the College’s state-of-the-art Auto Centre.

  • In Heavy Vehicle, CAVC swept the board, with Luke Friston winning gold, Philip Gregory silver and Dafydd Jones taking bronze
  • Vehicle Refinishing saw Sion Lewis win gold and Owen Sims win silver
  • In Vehicle Body Repair, Lewis Hastings won gold and Joel Windsor brought home the silver medal

CAVC also saw a medallist in Inclusive Skills, a skills contest for people with additional learning needs. Owen Parton won a bronze medal in Inclusive Auto Tech.

Cardiff and Vale College Deputy Principal Sharon James said: “Congratulations to all of our Auto award winners – to do so well under such challenging circumstances is a really impressive achievement! It is also testament to the hard work and dedication of the College’s industry expert Auto team, who really go that extra mile to ensure their learners reach such a high standard.”
