About this course
This course is intended to prepare you linguistically, academically, culturally and psychologically to make the transition to a UK university education. The course will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to deal with the demands of an undergraduate degree programme in business and management and related discipline areas. It is designed for international students and, therefore, an emphasis has been put on developing a genuine proficiency in general and academic English that will allow you to feel confident at an Undergraduate level study.
The course will allow you to gain a comprehensive knowledge of key business and management themes covered at university and to create a solid foundation for your future studies.
What you will study
On this course, students will study the following:
Business and Management:
This unit aims to give you a grounding in the key underpinning concepts of business and management. You will be given the knowledge and understanding of the main topics you are likely to study in further depth at university, such as the fundamental nature of business, management, business theory and how business is continually evolving in our complex global world.
The unit covers the principles of business and management and encourages familiarisation with essential terminology, concepts, theories and models in these subject areas, so that you will be able to refer to them confidently in their future studies.
The business numeracy unit will provide you with underpinning knowledge of mathematical and statistical concepts particularly relevant in business and
management and develop a grounding in data literacy, including confidence in the use of data and data management tools in business and real-world contexts.
English Language Studies:
This unit focus on the development of your communicative competence in general English as a foundation for further study. You will be able to develop the four core skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking including grammar and phonology to an upper-intermediate level of English.
English for Academic Purposes:
The aim of this unit is to develop your academic literacy and English Language proficiency. The unit covers the four core skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking and key areas of academic lexis and register. You will also improve key language and exam skills required to succeed in an academic English proficiency exam.
Study Skills and TEL:
The aim of this unit is to prepare you for study at Higher Education (HE) level by providing and developing the required study skills and familiarisation with the digital tools, technologies and techniques that you will need for academic success. A further aim is to develop a greater awareness of the UK HE sector, in terms of its features, regulations, norms, idiosyncrasies and expectations.
All applicants will need to have an IELTS (or equivalent SELT) of 5.0 overall with a minimum of 4.5 in writing and speaking in order to qualify to study on the programme. Completion of 11 years of schooling and 4 GCSE passes (A-E) or equivalent. Must include at least a B (4) in Mathematics GCSE or equivalent*. Applicants starting the programme in September, will need to be be 16.5 years of age by the 1st of September.
Teaching and assessment
Course contact time: 22 hours/ week
Method of delivery: Learning is via through a blend of formal lectures in relevant content areas, interactive seminars, practical workshops, on-line supported self-study and peer support activities. In addition, formative learning opportunities are incorporated into each of the units.

Assessment will include a blend of formative and summative assessment in each unit. Tutor and peer feedback on assignment drafts, weekly reading and writing exercises and language workshop activities.

To successfully pass the Diploma, learners must demonstrate that they have met all requirements and learning outcomes, by passing each unit with an aggregate minimum mark of 50% or other pass mark as agreed by our university progression partners.
