About this course

The Information and Communication Technology A2 programme is a one-year course of study and should be taken in conjunction with two or three other subjects and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Based at our City Centre campus in Cardiff, learners may be able to take this qualification as a part-time student.

What you will study

This specification encourages candidates to become discerning users of ICT, developing a broad range of ICT skills, knowledge and understanding.  A2 ICT follows on from AS and covers the following two modules:

Module 3: Use and Impact of ICT

This is the theory component and topics studied will include:

  • Computer networks
  • Database theory
  • Impact of ICT
  • Management Information Systems (MIS)
  • Human computer interaction

Candidates should also consider other contemporary hardware and software.

Module 4: Relational Databases

This unit requires candidates to produce a relational database project. The database project does not have to be based in an actual commercial context, but candidates should be encouraged to develop a realistic system.

When undertaking this unit, candidates should be able to:

  • Discover how a structured database could be used in an organisation
  • Understand data types and formats
  • Discover how data is captured and prepared for use in a relational database
  • Understand validation techniques to minimise errors
  • Learn and apply the principles of normalisation of data with respect to relational database design
  • Design, implement and test a relational database to meet a specification
  • Produce user documentation
  • Develop good practice in their use of ICT
  • Be able to evaluate their design

There is one exam which is 2.25 hrs in June, as well as one internally assessed and externally moderated piece of work.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of AS programme including satisfactory attendance and tutor recommendation.

What our students say

I came to the College as I wanted to travel and become more independent – it’s so modern and looks amazing. When I saw the library I was sold. Honestly the library was my main pull, there are so many books I loved it.
Someone came in to speak to us about the Sutton Trust, which gives students a taste of life at American universities. I applied - it was really competitive but I got in. We went to a different state every day, and we went to different colleges including Princeton and Harvard. I also had a week at Warwick Uni and a week at Nottingham Uni. It was so good – I just loved it.
You have a lot of support at the College, especially from the Careers and Ideas team. I think there are a lot more opportunities here as it is such a big college with so many resources.
