About this course
Our Foundation Degree in Film is an exciting course with a broad vocational base, designed to meet the fast-paced requirements of a creative workplace, particularly in the areas of Film and Television. The course teaches an equal balance of Drama and Documentary production. This enables the learner to choose whether they want to study documentary production or drama production if they choose to progress onto third year at the University of South Wales, and top up their qualification to a full BA degree.
The course is delivered across two sites, City Centre Campus and Cardiff Arts Academy.
What you will study
In the first year you will complete six modules:
Study Skills, Film Theory and Analysis - this is designed to engage you in critical thinking about films, and prepare you for written assignments.
Craft Skills - teaches the basics of the craft of film making from cinematography to sound, to editing and script writing.
Writing for Fiction and Documentary - this further develops your skills in writing for the screen.
Telling Stories and Dissecting Stories - these are practical modules where you make fiction and documentary films.
In the second year you complete another six modules: Advanced Craft Skills 1 & 2, Film Analysis 2, Character and Narrative and Truth and Telling; which are all designed to further enhance the skills developed in the first year programme.
If you are successful in passing all modules, you will be invited to apply for a top-up year at the University of South Wales, where you can achieve a full BA degree in Film.

Typical BTEC Offer - relevant BTEC level 3 profile of Merit/Pass or Pass/Pass/Pass Typical Welsh Bacc Offer - Grade C and DE at A Level
Typical Access to HE Offer - Pass Diploma with 60 credits overall to include 45 level 3 credits all passes.
Additionally, GCSE passes in three subjects at grade C or above to include Mathematics and English Language (or equivalent).
A successful interview may also be a requirement for entry onto the course.

Time of day
We were taught about script writing, film making and documentary making, camera skills and the technical side. Before I joined CAVC I thought I was Spielberg, College and the course puts it into perspective and really prepares you for the world of work. The tutors teach you to become an industry professional.
Career prospects & further study
After completing this course, successful candidates may have the option to continue their studies for a third year at the University of South Wales, to obtain the full honours degree. Many students will also pursue various employment opportunities within the creative industry.
