Further Mathematics - AS

L3 Level 3
Full Time
6 September 2021 — 24 June 2022
City Centre Campus, Cardiff

About this course

The Further Mathematics AS programme is a one-year course of study and should be taken in conjunction with two or three other subjects and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Based at our City Centre campus in Cardiff, learners may be able to take this qualification as a part-time student.

AS Level Further Mathematics (new specification) is a good choice for pupils due to the flexibility that it offers:

  • It supports other subjects such as all three sciences, Psychology, Information Technology and many others.
  • It is recommended that any student wanting to go onto University to study a STEM subject (especially mathematics or engineering) should study Further Mathematics.
  • It develops your ability to think logically and present formal arguments, which is essential in any career.
  • It is a challenging qualification, welcomed by all universities, whichever degree course you apply to study.

All colleges/sixth forms in Wales will be delivering the exact same specification from September 2017.

What you will study

There will be three units, each accounting for 1/3 of the AS qualification, which itself will account for 40% of the A Level qualification.

All units are compulsory

None of the papers require any knowledge of A2 Mathematics, however, the final assessment will assume knowledge of AS mathematics.

Each paper will comprise a number of short and longer, both structured and unstructured questions, which may be set on any part of the subject content of the unit. A number of questions will assess learners' understanding of more than one topic from the subject content. Each unit will be examined with the aid of a calculator.

AS Unit 1: Further Pure Mathematics A

Written examination: 1 hours 30 minutes (70 marks) - 13.3% of A-Level qualification

This module will deepen and broaden your understanding of pure mathematics. It will extend your knowledge of algebra, functions and vectors, while also introducing you to new, very important topics such as complex numbers, matrices and methods of proof.

AS Unit 2: Further Statistics A

Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes (70 marks) - 13.3% of A-level qualification

This module will broaden your understanding of statistical distributions and statistical inference. Specifically, you will be introduced to important statistical models such as the Poisson process and the exponential distribution. You will also look at models for “goodness of fit” such as Spearman’s rank and Chi-squared.

AS Unit 3: Further Mechanics A

Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes (70 marks) - 13.3% of A-level qualification

This unit will extend your knowledge of mechanical models to cover momentum and impulse - Hooke’s Law, Work, Energy, Power and circular motion. In addition, you will be introduced to the application of calculus to vectors that model motion.

NOTE: There are no longer options modules in further mathematics. From September 2017, all students will study the same modules in all centres. In addition to this, the new AS qualification will now account for 40% of the overall A-level qualification.

What our students say

I came to the College as I wanted to travel and become more independent – it’s so modern and looks amazing. When I saw the library I was sold. Honestly the library was my main pull, there are so many books I loved it.
Someone came in to speak to us about the Sutton Trust, which gives students a taste of life at American universities. I applied - it was really competitive but I got in. We went to a different state every day, and we went to different colleges including Princeton and Harvard. I also had a week at Warwick Uni and a week at Nottingham Uni. It was so good – I just loved it.
You have a lot of support at the College, especially from the Careers and Ideas team. I think there are a lot more opportunities here as it is such a big college with so many resources.
